Walls of text

AI didn't write this rant, or whatever you may want to call it.

There's a flood of text inundating our days. People outsource thinking, and deliver fat documents that don't say anything. We are in the age of auto-generated fluff.

People confuse doing the work, with outputting a Doc. The real work, is thinking. The real work is structuring your thoughts, balancing different perspectives and generating a point of view on a matter.

When output looks legitimate, it's easy to mistake volume for value. I've been reading business/product documents for over a decade, it's part of my job, and they never felt as empty as now. I've read so many words, so little value. We are at a point where you can't actually discuss an idea, there's very little to engage with. There's a loose point of view held by a few keystrokes on a chat interface.

This is happening everywhere. People don't do the hard work of understanding a problem, so they have AI outputting a grocery list of solutions. People don't want to think through strategy, so they have AI generate a vision doc. People don't want to take notes in meetings, so they have AI summarising every single call. People don't want to define their brand's positioning, so they let AI write a bunch of generic website copy that could apply to their competitors.

I use AI on a daily basis, it helps me understand concepts and correlate different ideas. It's faster than searching the world wide web.

AI can be a great tool, but it can't think for you. If you let it, you're not just producing less quality work, but you're actively making it harder for anyone around you to do good work at all.

A lonely sharp and well-reasoned single page, will always outweigh a ten pager filled with fluff.

"Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly." — David McCullough

Go write. Write wrong, but write. Think, learn, write better.
